Artwork by Charles Dickens Collaborators on View in Honor of PlayMakers’ Production of Nicholas Nickleby

CHAPEL HILL, NC – In conjunction with PlayMakers Repertory Company’s production The
Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby (November 11 – December 20, 2009), the Ackland Art Museum will present The Illustrated World of Charles Dickens (November 4 – December 6, 2009), a selection of original drawings, illustrations, and prints that illuminate the early Victorian world and literary culture of Dickens’ England.

Drawn entirely from the Museum’s permanent collection, the installation will include works by Dickens’ chief artistic collaborators: George Cruikshank,Phiz,” and John Leech. Installed in the Ackland’s new second floor Study Gallery, the works invite questions about the dynamic relationship between literature, art, and theatre.
“This is a unique opportunity for the Ackland’s collection of illustrations to intersect almost perfectly with a current production at PlayMakers Repertory Company,” said Ackland Director Emily Kass. “It’s an exciting partnership that helps make this ambitious production an even more rich artistic experience for our campus and community.”

The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby will be the biggest production in PlayMakers’ history, bringing Dickens’ masterpiece to life with 25 actors playing over 150 characters. More at playmakersrep.org.
